Hold it Down presents "In The Garden" - feat. Basement Jaxx

Late September usually brings about a bustling, excited atmosphere in Exeter. An arrival of thousands of university students, the return of pupils to local schools and colleges, and this year some pleasant late-season weather. For 2015, however, autumnal excitement reached fever pitch with the announcement of an open-air city centre concert featuring none other than 90’s dance heroes Basement Jaxx.

Taking place in newly-licensed Northernhay Gardens, the event saw over 4000 city residents and music tourists revel in an all-day extravaganza of electronica – with the headline act supported by the likes of Wretch 32 and Stormzy. This show exhibited production values of a level rarely seen in the centre of the city; a 16m Orbit Stage, complete with impressive 48m2 video screen. On the audio front, Puxley were delighted to install and operate a d&b audiotechnik Q1 line array system complete with microphone/monitoring package and noise monitoring service. The Basement Jaxx DJ set proved a great success, with the duo performing on top of the line Pioneer and Technics DJ equipment, complemented by live visuals and an expertly programmed light show.

Mixing live audio is what we’re about – it’s a complex yet focused and clear-cut core competence. However, each show arrives with it’s idiosyncrasies. Stopping these turning into challenges, however, is another key skill we’re proud to claim. On the face of it, a city centre concert featuring such a revered UK act should be a cause for celebration, but in reality not all feel the same way. As audio contractor, a balancing act was required of us. The expectations of the promoter, city council, local residents, and indeed the audience themselves had to be managed, whilst at the same time providing a production environment that the act were proud to be a part of. In short, the gig needed great sound but the neighbours needed peace.

“Simply the best! These guys come highly recommended- the very epitome of professionalism and attention to detail.”

Aaron Hornibrook, Promoter – Hold It Down

From the outset we worked together with ACT Acoustics (an independent audio consultant) to generate a Noise Management Plan in order to diminish any negative impact the concert had on local stakeholders. Through the deployment of carefully designed cardioid subwoofer arrays we were able to stay beneath decibel levels pre-agreed with the relevant authorities, utilising on-site and off-site live audio monitoring to ensure compliance – while maintaining a fantastic concert experience for all involved.

Whether your event is large or small, we can help you meet the environmental objectives relevant to your event – from basic noise monitoring services to all-encompassing noise management solutions. Get in touch with our office to find out more.
